Do I need a smart meter?

Across the UK more and more homes are being fitted with smart meters that should make our energy use more visible. Although not a legal requirement, the government has high hopes to have smart meters installed in every home by 2020. So let’s take a closer look at smart meters to understand how they are useful

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter is a device designed to help you understand and quantify your energy use by displaying accurate results about energy use instead of estimations like traditional meters. This makes it easier to compare your energy usage and understand your bills.

Why will they be helpful?

We often forget how much energy home appliances are using, like dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer… The idea is to make households aware of how much energy each appliance is using and promote a more conscious energy usage among the public. Perhaps we will ensure our dishwasher is full before setting it off, dry our clothes on a drying rack as oppose to the tumble drier, or wash clothes on an eco setting. Little things like that add up, and slightly adjusting our habits can save quite a lot of money in the long run.

Does the smart meter really work?

In light of smartphone apps and other online means of attracting households to stay on top of their monthly energy usage, we believe smart meters act as a primary and most reliable way of recording consumption of electric energy.

Will a smart meter save me money?

A smart meter will not cut your bills in half on it’s own, but it can help smooth power consumption as consumers adjust their electricity usage.
